Kayak weekend in the Rhodopes – Golyam Beglik dam

Mystical morning mists combined with the scent of centuries-old pine forests

Kayak weekend at Golyam Beglik dam. The nature reserve and the dam of the same name in the Western Rhodopes are a wonderful place for a secluded holiday without dust, without noisy companies in the neighborhood, alone with nature and its inhabitants.

Golyam Beglik Dam (formerly Vasil Kolarov) can be reached on the main road 37 south of Dospat and north of Batak. The section in both directions is about 19 km. Nearby are the dams “Shiroka Polyana”, “Batak”, “Dospat” and “Toshkov Chark”.

Kayak weekend at Golyam Beglik dam, which is located at 1525 m above sea level, and a passable and light road passes by it.

The road is very picturesque and in places winds close to the shore, and in other crevices through the forest, somewhere up to about half a kilometer into the ancient forest. The whole route near the dam is about 25 km long, of which only 5 km are asphalt.

The name of the reservoir, as well as the place Beglika, comes from the time of Turkish slavery and means the place where shepherds led their flocks to count livestock and tax.
